Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries govern monument dimensions, base depth, and acceptable stone colors through their own written rules, which can vary significantly from one institution to the next. Some restrict overall height to 36 inches above grade; others allow taller upright monuments with prior approval. Many faith-based cemeteries in Morris and Bergen counties have restrictions specific to their denomination — for example, some Catholic cemeteries require a flat base flush with the lawn, while others permit upright markers of traditional height. Angel Memorials reviews each cemetery's regulations before your stone enters production, ensuring full compliance without last-minute surprises.

Foundation Requirements

Most New Jersey cemeteries require a concrete foundation — often called a sub-base or footing — beneath any upright granite monument. Standard depth requirements range from 12 to 24 inches depending on the cemetery and the size of the monument. For angel-themed headstones, which often carry additional sculptural weight at the crown, a reinforced foundation is especially important. Angel Memorials's installation team pours foundations to the precise specifications of each cemetery, then sets and levels the finished stone with mechanical equipment to ensure it will stand plumb for generations.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Angel imagery carries particular significance within Christian, Catholic, and certain non-denominational faith traditions. Before commissioning a sculpted angel headstone, we recommend confirming with your cemetery's office whether figurative imagery is permitted. Some Orthodox Jewish cemeteries, for instance, restrict representational sculpture in keeping with religious law, while many Catholic and non-sectarian cemeteries actively welcome angel motifs. Our team has decades of experience navigating these conversations with sensitivity. We will never pressure you toward a design your tradition does not permit, and we are glad to suggest faith-appropriate alternatives when needed.

Angel-Themed Headstone

An angel-themed headstone occupies a singular place in the tradition of memorial art. The figure of an angel — wings open or folded, face lifted or bowed in prayer — communicates what words often cannot: that this person was cherished, that their passing was grieved deeply, and that faith carries their memory forward. At Angel Memorials, we hand-carve each angel figure from premium American granite, working with families to determine the posture, scale, and level of detail that honors their loved one most authentically. Some families choose a full-height guardian angel rising from an upright base; others prefer a smaller, bas-relief angel carved into the face of the stone. Both approaches are available in our Morris County workshop. The granite itself may be selected from several colors — jet black, medium gray, deep blue-gray, or warm mahogany — each lending a distinct character to the finished piece. Lettering, floral borders, and personal emblems are incorporated as part of a unified composition rather than added as afterthoughts. The result is a sacred, enduring marker shaped by human hands and intended to stand in quiet witness for generations.

Granite Options

Granite is the preferred material for angel-themed headstones because of its exceptional hardness, its ability to hold fine sculptural detail across decades of weathering, and its natural beauty. Angel Memorials sources American-made granite slabs that meet or exceed industry standards for porosity and structural integrity. For angel sculptures, we most often work with India Black (a deep, uniform black that photographs beautifully and accepts polished lettering with high contrast), Mountain Gray (a classic medium gray with subtle crystalline variation), and Dakota Mahogany (a warm reddish-brown that reads as dignified and traditional). Each color interacts differently with natural light at the graveside — black granite makes lettering and carved relief highly visible; gray and mahogany varieties cast softer shadows that emphasize sculptural depth. Our showroom in Morris County maintains sample slabs so families can compare colors and finishes before committing.

Custom Design Process

Every angel-themed headstone we produce begins with a conversation. During your consultation — at our Morris County showroom or by telephone in English, Russian, or Polish — we listen to what you envision and what your loved one meant to your family. Our designers then produce a scaled drawing showing the proposed angel figure, the stone dimensions, lettering layout, and any additional carved elements. You review and approve this drawing before any granite is touched. Once approved, our artisans transfer the design to the stone and begin the hand-carving process, checking progress against the approved drawing at each stage. Families are welcome to visit the workshop during production to see their stone taking shape. Final installation is coordinated directly with the cemetery to meet all regulatory requirements.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Every angel headstone produced in our Morris County workshop follows a six-stage process that has guided Angel Memorials craftsmen for over 80 years. First, we meet with your family to gather details about your loved one and your vision for the memorial — dimensions, figure style, lettering, and any personal symbols that carry meaning. Second, our designers produce a scaled drawing that shows every element in its correct proportion, which you review and approve before any work begins. Third, the approved design is transferred to the selected granite slab using a precise template, ensuring that the carved areas align exactly with the polished face and the finished edges. Fourth, our artisans begin hand-carving the angel figure using both pneumatic tools and traditional hand chisels, working from the rough silhouette inward to finer details — the feathers of the wings, the drape of fabric, the expression of the face. Fifth, the carved surfaces are finished — some left with a natural matte texture that catches light softly, others polished to a high mirror sheen for contrast. Sixth, the completed stone is inspected, crated, transported to the cemetery, and installed by our crew directly on the prepared foundation. We photograph the installed monument and share the image with your family.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“We were hesitant — we had never ordered a custom monument before. The team at Angel Memorials walked us through every step without any pressure, and the angel they carved for our mother is more beautiful than anything we had imagined. Standing at her grave, we feel her presence.” — Maria, Morris County NJ
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a headstones?

From the first design consultation to installed monument, most angel-themed headstones take between eight and twelve weeks. This timeline covers design approval, stone fabrication, and coordination with the cemetery for foundation preparation and installation. Certain cemeteries have their own scheduling requirements that can affect timing, and we communicate those to you upfront.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Angel Memorials places monuments in cemeteries across all 14 New Jersey counties, including Morris, Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson, Union, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean. We coordinate installation logistics directly with each cemetery's monument office.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Every headstone we produce is designed and fabricated to meet the specific rules of the receiving cemetery. Before production begins, we obtain or review the cemetery's monument regulations — including height limits, base requirements, and acceptable materials — and build your stone to those specifications.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Absolutely. Many families bring photographs of angels they admire, religious imagery meaningful to their tradition, or sketches of their own. Our designers use those references as a starting point, adapting them to granite and to your cemetery's permitted dimensions. The final design is always yours to approve.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. We design and install companion monuments that accommodate both a veteran's military branch emblem, service dates, and rank alongside an angel figure or other sacred imagery. We are also familiar with VA burial benefits and can advise families on coordinating government-furnished markers with a private custom stone.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
